Lagos buys two aircraft to fight crime

The Lagos State government has bought two new helicopters as part of its measure to strengthen security.

Speaking yesterday at the 3rd Town Hall meeting on security in Ikeja, the state capital, Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) said the helicopters are configured to serve as medical evacuators and crime fighters.

He said 10 new Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) have been ordered and will be delivered in no distant time.

Besides, Fashola launched State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) official website and e-donation engine.

These, he said, would enable individual donate in a simple way.

The Governor said being a mega city state, a lot needs to be done in Lagos to make it compete with other world cities for investments.

"In order to broaden the funds, public ownership and attract a wider participation of citizens and businesses of all social and economic levels, the fund proposed and I endorsed the establishment of two schemes that will provide a platform for ordinary Nigerians here and abroad to make their contributions," Fashola said.

He said the state government had since committed over N3 billion to the fund, adding that the reality of the crime situation demanded the investment.

"As things stand now in the face of the potential for continuing violent crime, sectarian tensions, kidnapping and the challenges of maintaining public order and protecting public facilities, there is no immediate viable alternative to the model we are operating, an intervention mechanism that is able to quickly respond to security challenges and resource operatives in key operational areas and at critical times," the Governor said

Fashola, who hailed the feat achieved by the police, said although the state government, would.
