As preparations to host the U-17 World Cup from 24 October, 2009 gear up, the chairman of the host local government in the Lagos sub-seat, Dr. Rasaq Oyesegun Folami, has declared the readiness of Surulere Local Government for the one-month soccer fiesta.
Speaking with LG Circuit in his office on Monday, the council boss said that Surulere as the host of the Lagos sub-seat of the competition, is fully prepared to complement the efforts of the federal and state governments.
“As you must have been aware, Surulere Local Government, as the sports city and cradle of champions, will host the Lagos zone of the World Cup at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, which has been adjudged as the best by FIFA.
“In view of this, we have made preparations for transportation which include traffic control, parking and diversion. We have also organised security within the local government, spanning one kilometre radius from the stadium in accordance with FIFA’s rule,” Folami disclosed.
He stated further that the local government would also showcase its hospitality to the world by establishing in place viewing centres in order to reduce the stress of most of the football fans who may not be able to get into the stadium.
Folami said Surulere now wears a new look following continuous environmental exercises to ensure the permanent cleanliness of the entire council area during and after the World Cup.
He also promised that there will be exhibition of arts and culture during the soccer festival.
